Getting to iKhayalamafu: Directions, the Gate and the Road

Plan your trip

iKhayalamafu sits at the very top of the Champagne Valley, under Cathkin Peak and Champagne Castle, and getting here is part of the adventure. None of it is difficult. It just helps to know a few things before you set off.

Finding us

We’re in the Monk’s Cowl area of the Central Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal, with the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park on three sides of the reserve. There’s no street address this far up, so before you arrive we’ll send you directions and a location pin on WhatsApp.

Arrive before six

The last part of the drive takes you through the Ezemvelo gate at Monk’s Cowl, which is locked from 18:00 until 06:00. Check-in runs from 14:00 to 18:00, so aim for mid-afternoon and you’ll have time to unpack before the light goes. Once you’re here we’ll give you a gate key, so evenings out in the valley are no problem.

The road in

The final 1.5 km is a gravel road that’s been in use since the 1960s. Any car with decent ground clearance will manage it. A very low sedan might scrape, so if you’re unsure, send us a photo of your car on WhatsApp and we’ll give you an honest answer.

What to pack

The cabins are self-catering, with a gas hob, microwave, fridge and a braai, so bring food, drinks and charcoal. Firewood and kindling are provided, but if you love a fire every night, a couple of extra bundles won’t go to waste. Bring layers and a rain jacket whatever the forecast says. Up here, a hot morning can turn into a cold, misty afternoon in an hour.

Last-minute supplies are easy on the way up. The Valley Bakery does lovely bread, Scrumpy Jack’s has honey and farm-stall treats, and there’s more in our Champagne Valley guide.

Power, water and Wi-Fi

The reserve runs on its own solar panels and battery bank, so loadshedding won’t touch your stay. Water comes from mountain streams above the property, filtered and heated by solar geysers. Both cabins have Wi-Fi for when you need it.

When it’s time to leave

Check-out is between 06:00 and 10:00. Stays are a minimum of two nights, because a drive this beautiful deserves more than one sleep at the end of it.
