A Romantic Getaway in the Drakensberg: Adults-Only Cabins for Two

The Milky Way over the mountains at iKhayalamafu

Getaways for two

There are only two cabins at iKhayalamafu, each made for two adults and set far enough apart in a private nature reserve that you won’t see another guest unless you go looking. There’s no restaurant, no reception and no kids’ pool, which is rather the point.

Mornings on the deck

Make coffee and take it outside. The birds start early and they aren’t shy. Cape white-eyes move through the branches in chattering little flocks, an olive thrush works the grass, sunbirds flash at the flowers and swee waxbills pick at seed heads. If you’re lucky, a chorister robin-chat will start up nearby, borrowing other birds’ songs as if it wrote them.

Afternoons on foot

Nandi’s Falls is an easy walk from your door. Pack a picnic, follow the path on into the Hlathikulu Forest, where it’s cool and deeply quiet, and be back on the deck before the light turns gold.

Evenings by the fire

Both cabins have a fireplace with firewood and kindling ready to go, electric blankets for cold nights and a braai on the covered patio. Once it’s dark, step outside. We’re far from any town light, and on a clear night the Milky Way spills right across the sky above the escarpment.

Which cabin?

Ingwe has the view, a private deck looking straight out at the Little Berg. Inyoka is the cosier of the two, tucked into indigenous forest beside a stream you’ll hear all night. Both have a king bed (or two singles), a full kitchen, an en-suite shower and Wi-Fi you’re welcome to ignore.

In our guests’ words

One guest sent us this after heading home:

We really had a special time. Thanks a lot. I will always recommend your place to anyone. We came back home with full hearts and recharged, ready to end the year strong.

Good to know

Stays are two nights minimum. Check-in is from 14:00 to 18:00, and the Monk’s Cowl gate locks at 18:00, so aim to arrive in daylight. The cabins are self-catering, so bring your own food, drinks and charcoal. We’re unable to accommodate children or pets.
